Halong Bay set to host tourist week: Halong cruise

A tourist week themed “Halong – A world natural wonder” will open in the town on April 25, authorities in the northern province of Quang Ninh have announced.

The festival will see performers from China’s Guang xi, Hainan, and Yunnan provinces, Laos’ Luang Prabang Province and the Republic of Korea’s Gangwon Province.

The opening ceremony on April 26 will feature a floating stage on the sea and a procession of boats and ships.

During the week, there will be national and international music and dance performances, an international trade fair, a food fair, and a beauty contest to crown Miss Halong 2008.

With voting to nominate the “New Seven Wonders of Nature” having begun, Halong Bay has climbed into the top ten.

US firm to help turn focus away from bay and on Halong town

US consulting firm Strategic Think Tank has drawn up a tourism master plan for Vietnam’s world heritage town Halong to enable it to attract international investment.

Following a deal signed earlier this week, the US firm will provide a comprehensive scheme to develop tourism and leisure activities in Halong whose attractions are now largely confined to its limestone islands, water, and caves.

It will include building entertainment areas and shopping and service areas at either end of Bai Chay Bridge, and developing more attractions in the city.

The two sides will establish a committee to find investors for recreation projects once the master plan is ready by year-end.

The US company will also invite other consultants from the US to study the city’s tourism status.

Strategic Think Tank, headquartered in the US capital Washington, consults and conducts social, technological, and weapons research.

Halong welcomed 439,200 tourists in the first quarter, a year-on-year rise of 39 percent, 261,000 of them foreigners.
